The first partner places their hand on the cake-cutting knife, and then the second partner places their hand over the first as they make two gentle cuts to form a single slice of cake. You then remove the slice onto a plate. They proceed to feed each other.

The cake-cutting event takes place immediately following the main course as dessert and is announced to all the guests so that they can gather together to witness the special moment. It really shouldn’t take much longer than 3 minutes but you never know.

Be sure to have a few cake-cutting songs in case the cake event runs more than 3 minutes — the average length of a pop song. If you’re worried, talk to your professional wedding planner and DJ.

After the official cake cutting, the remainder of the cake is cut to serve your wedding guests. The catering staff or a designated person usually performs this task.

Typically, the bride and groom purchase a cake serving set. It may even be on their wedding registry — pre-purchased and monogrammed. The cake serving set includes the wedding cake knife and the serving knife. Don’t forget the wedding cake topper, too!

Quick tip for cutting the cake: Run the knife under hot water, dry it off, and then cut the cake. It works like a charm. However, you may need to reheat the knife a few times while slicing the whole cake.

When cutting the cake, keep in mind the standard size of a piece of cake is 1 inch by 2 inches. If you are worried about too much fun in the mashing of cake, we would recommend the use of forks for feeding the bride and groom on your wedding china. This can also be made extra special with the purchase of special wedding-themed forks.

No. Of course not. We understand that professional bakers charge a premium for their custom art. To save costs, modern couples buy a wedding cake just for the wedding party and freeze the top for the one-year anniversary. Guests are served sliced sheet cake or even cupcakes from the back.

Some wedding couples also choose to have a special separate groom cake. We all remember the armadillo cake made famous in Steel Magnolias. Maybe don’t make that one a red velvet cake.

You can also serve cupcakes which are on-trend for modern couples. If the bridal couple has cupcakes, they can choose to cut one cupcake in half or have a separate cake to cut. But if you do serve cupcakes, you’ll still want plates and forks. Or you’ll have a lot of frosting on your wedding guests’ noses.
