Drew Angus Interview by My Wedding Songs

Who are some of the artists that have influenced your music style?

Classics like Tom Petty, The Rolling Stones, SRV, and folks like John Mayer, Ben Rector, Jason Mraz.

You recently released the song “Made to Love You”. Can you tell us the backstory of the song?

Last year (pre-covid), my friends (we’ll call them B+T) came to me looking for the perfect wedding song for their first dance. Having played 100’s of weddings at this point, my wedding singer sales pitch took over and I fired off the top 10 first dance songs I’d sang in the last year and went about my business.

After I hung up the phone with B+T, I remembered that my co-writer, Matt, and I had written a verse and part of a chorus for a new song earlier that week that might fit as a first dance. I sent B+T a voice memo of the demo with a “what about this?” text. They fell in love with it immediately.

With their 11-year love story in mind, the song finished itself. It was meant to be!

Do you have any favorite lyrics in “ Made to Love You”?

I really love “Hearts were made to beat, hands were made to hold, now with you in front of me…” because it just evokes such a clear picture of two people kind of realizing they’re completely in sync and that’s the kind of thing that gives you butterflies!

Did you have any help in producing the song?

My producer Mikhail Pivovarov has been my partner in crime on many of my recent releases. We brought in Dave Eggar who wrote the cello parts for Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida,” on Cello, Nicholas Wells who’s worked with Adele, and Five for Fighting on Keys. It was a dream team for me!

You have a beautifully produced video for the song. Can you tell us about it?

We filmed a one-shot music video – no cuts! – featuring two incredible NYC ballet dancers, Silken Kelly and Jonatan Lujan, and choreographed themselves. The video was directed by Shari Goldenberg and shot by Todd Rawizer. The way Silken and Jonatan took the lyrics and made it their own through movement is emotional to watch. The incredible Unison Productions team really excelled in capturing their passion to produce a beautifully shot film that depicts the meaning behind this special song.

“Made to Love You” makes for a great wedding song. Can you share any wedding stories with the song?

I wrote it to my best friend and his fiance for their first dance!

With so many people sheltered in place and social distancing, what have you been doing to keep busy?

2020 was a wild year! I think you can probably relate. But I made the best of it. I released two singles “Mr. Gemini” and “Just a Dream” and a parody video of Andrew Gold’s “Thank You For Being A Friend” to say thank you to all of the frontline workers. The video features 15 musicians and 28+ family, friends, and fans expressing their gratitude for the people who kept the country moving while we were all stuck at home. Oh and then I wrote and released a Christmas record as well. It was a busy time. ha!

If you were able to play with any current music artists, who would they be and where would you play?

John Mayer, Harry Styles, Ben Rector, Kacey Musgraves…. at Red Rocks.

Do you have any plans to release new music or upcoming projects?

I have “Made to Love You” out now wherever you listen to music and the music video comes out on Friday, 5/7/21 at 12:15 pm premier on YouTube and I’m working on a record slated for a fall 2021 release!
